Thom Yorke, Beyonce & Elton John Make Oscars' Best Original Song Shortlist

Beyonce, Elton John, and Thom Yorke are among the musicians shortlisted at the 92nd Academy Awards.

On Monday night (December 16), the Academy of Motion Pictures and Arts and Sciences unveiled its nine shortlists in consideration for the 2020 Oscars, which included Best Original Song. Of the 75 eligible songs, 15 have advanced in the Original Song category as voted by members of the music branch.

Among the shortlisted songs includes Yorke’s “Daily Battles” from Motherless Brooklyn, Beyonce’s “Spirit” from The Lion King, Pharrell Williams and Clad Hugo’s “Letter to My Godfather” from The Black Grandfather, Idina Menzel’s “Into the Unknown” from Frozen 2, Cynthia Erivo’s “Stand Up” from Harriet, and Randy Newman’s “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from Toy Story 4 are included in the list. Additionally, John has been twice-nominated for his work with Tim Rice on “Never Too Late” from The Lion King, and Bernie Taupin on “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman.

Next year’s Academy Award for Best Original Song will follow after the previous winner, “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, performed by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, who co-wrote the Oscar-winning record with Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Anthony Rossomando.

The complete list of 2020 Oscars nominees will officially be announced on January 13, with the ceremony to broadcast on February 9.
